Mental Health And Covid 19

Over the past 2 years, the world has experienced a predicament that has not been seen in a century. The Covid-19 pandemic took a huge toll on people’s mental health and overall wellbeing. Symptoms of stress, isolation, depression, anxiety and grief have all been on the rise since the pandemic started in 2020.

With the rise in mental health conditions also comes a rise in addiction. For a long time now, organizations like NIDA have traced the comorbidity of mental health and addiction. Comorbidity means that a condition can occur one right after the other or at the same time. Research suggests that people are more likely to self medicate with alcohol, marijuana or prescription drugs when faced with mental health disparities. Approximately half of the people who have mental health problems also have substance abuse problems. Conversely, mental health conditions can also lead to increased use of substances. The interconnections between substance use and mental health cannot be understated. Unfortunately, they both feed off each other and can make the other worse and worse.

How To Treat Substance Abuse And Mental Health

The struggle between mental health and substance abuse is most definitely real. Fortunately, there are several therapeutic modalities and practices one can use to help overcome their struggles.

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT)
  • Mindfulness practices
  • Family support systems
